    The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Established in 1989, NIOS provides opportunities for education to those who cannot attend conventional schools due to various reasons, including socio-economic constraints, geographical barriers, or personal commitments.

    NIOS offers a flexible and open system of education, allowing students to choose their subjects and study at their own pace. It offers courses at the secondary and senior secondary levels, equivalent to grades 10 and 12 in the traditional school system, along with vocational courses and life enrichment programs.

    NIOS is recognized by the Government of India and its certificates are valid for all purposes, including higher education and employment, both in India and abroad. The institute also focuses on inclusivity, offering education to marginalized communities, including differently-abled learners, women, and working adults.
